High Pressure Solid State Structures of Simple Molecules
In this brief report I speculate on the transformation of several common molecular compounds into nonmolecular solids with extended atomic lattices , under high pressures and possibly with the aid of catalysts :
* chromium trioxide : from linear polymer chains into the rhenium(VI) oxide lattice ;
* sulfur trioxide : from helical polymer chains into the ReO3 lattice ;
* carbon dioxide : from dry ice into a linear polymer or the silica structure ;
* carbon monoxide : from the gas to a graphite sheet-like structure :
poly(carbon monoxide) , (CO)x : black spheres , carbon atoms ; red spheres , oxygen atoms .
